July 16, 2010
Formerly known as High School for Recording Arts Portland (HSRAP), the new public charter school has announced the selection The Recording. Entertainment. Arts. Literacy. Prep Charter Academy (or R.E.A.L. Prep Charter Academy) as their official name.
The school will open in Portland in the fall of 2011 and will address eduction through the arts, specifically hip-hop music and culture. Using project-based learning experiences, R.E.A.L. aims “to teach ‘core’ subject matter through music, dance, spoken word and visual arts. This exploration empowers the current generation of young artists by teaching through a lens that demands creative and critical thinking combined with science, technology and entrepreneurial skills. The curriculum centers around a student run, professionally guided entertainment company where students learn ‘The Business of Art and The Art of Business.’”
Their official release also states:
R.E.A.L. Prep was founded and developed by a community of teachers, parents, activists, entrepreneurs and artists who have been influenced by the teachings and values stemming from the underground and social justice movement at the root of hip hop culture. R.E.A.L. Prep Charter founders seized the opportunity available to all citizens to take action and enact change in the ongoing quest for equity reform in education. The unanimous approval by the PPS school board for R.E.A.L. Prep Charter Academy in December 2009 reflects the school’s strong research based best practices incorporating credit for proficiency, brain based learning, arts education, project based learning, career technical education, college and life readiness, and real cultural competency.
Throughout the summer R.E.A.L. Prep Charter Academy will host a series of youth hip-hop showcases every Tuesday night at Backspace (115 NW Fifth Avenue), 7:30 pm to 11pm. The free showcases provide young people an opportunity to experience hip-hop in a safe, positive environment, as well as offering families a chance to learn more about R.E.A.L. Prep.
